When Microsoft first announced its pricing scheme for Windows 7, one of the minor shocks was that Australia wasn’t to get the Family Pack discount bundle of three copies of Windows 7 upgrades that are available in other countries. Microsoft has now announced that it will be available from Dec 1, but in "limited stock" only... just in time for Christmas.
Responding to angry consumer outcries and criticism, Microsoft has been under pressure and rushed to make the Family Pack available to the Australian general public.
A Family Pack upgrade bundle consists of three upgrade copies of Windows 7 Home Premium (available in either 32-bit and 64-bit), for $249 RRP from December 1. Microsoft describes the deal as a “limited pilot” that will be available “only while stocks last”. That stacks up as exceptional value considering that a stand-alone upgrade edition of Windows 7 Home Premium has a RRP of $199. The Windows 7 Family Pack will upgrade three home PCs from either XP or Vista, which equates to a potential saving of $348.
