What are Sitelinks?

Sitelinks are the list of links that occasionally appear under the first website in Google’s search results page.

How Can I have Sitelinks displayed with my website?

The bad news is that Google decides who gets sitelinks and not you. In their Webmaster Help Center, Google states "We only show sitelinks for results when we think they'll be useful to the user. If the structure of your site doesn't allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don't think that the sitelinks for your site are relevant for the user's query, we won't show them."

So if you really want sitelinks displayed with your website, then you should consider the following facts:
  • Sitelinks only appear with sites that are in position #1 for the keywords searched
  • The website will need to have relatively high traffic. This means that your website should have lots of interesting content and also include links to other interesting and useful sites.
  • The website will need to have structured, search engine friendly navigation.
  • The website is at least a few years old. New sites rarely get sitelinks.

How can I change my Sitelinks?

So you’ve finally got sitelinks but find they aren’t linking to the pages you would prefer. Unfortunately Google does not allow you to specify new pages to link to but you can block some of the existing links. Follow these steps to block a sitelink.

  • The first thing you need to do is setup a Google Webmaster Tools account.
  • Once you've verified your account with Google, click on your website on the Webmaster Tools Dashboard
  • Under Links, click Sitelinks. The sitelink information will be displayed.
  • Click Block next to the sitelink you want to remove.
  • Once you've blocked or unblocked a sitelink, it can take some time for your changes to be visible.
  • Note that Google will only display sitelinks when a site has a minimum of three sitelinks available.
