Get more visitors to your website with SEO

Do you have a website that gets few visitors? If so, it’s time to do something about it.
The best way to get more visitors is by having Search Engine Optimisation work done on your website.
More visitors = more sales. It’s that simple.

How important is Search Engine Optimisation to your business?

Search is the second most common activity on the Internet after e-mail. Statistics show that 99.5% of Web users use search engines to find products and services. If your website is not easy to find, then prospective customers will only find your competitors and deal with them instead. Search Engine Optimisation is a process to enable prospective and existing customers, supporters and sponsors find your website quickly and easily on search engines such as Google.

How do you check if your website needs Search Engine Optimisation?

To see if your website needs SEO, open Google and try the following steps:

  • Think about what keywords or phrases prospective customers are going to search on to find your website? Remember to make sure the keywords or phrases are what people use and not the terms your industry use. A bank might use the term ‘lender’ but people are more likely to search for ‘borrow’. Think from a searcher's perspective. Once you have selected a list of keywords or phrases, do a search on each of them in Google. If you are aiming at the Australian market, select the ‘Pages from Australia’ option before clicking on Search.
Does your website appear at or near the top of the listings? If not, check if it is in the first two pages. If it is not in the first two pages for at least some of the searches, then you need SEO.
  • Type your own name or your organisation name in the search box. If your website does not appear in the first page, then you definitely need SEO.

What are your Search Engine Optimisation options?

There are mainly two types of SEO options you can consider – Organic SEO or Pay-Per-Click Advertising.

Pay Per Click Advertising

When you do a query on a search engine, you will see the “Sponsored Links” section at the top of your search results or on the right hand column of your screen. These are the Pay-Per-Click advertisements. If someone clicks on the link, you are charged a fee by the search engine. You can select the keywords and phrases appropriate to your web site. The advertisement appears anytime someone queries these specified keywords. You maintain the ranking by "bidding" an amount that you are willing to pay each time a visitor clicks on the link from a search engine results page. Usually the advertisement from the highest paying bidder appears in the top position. Google and Yahoo run the two most popular pay-per-click services.

Organic SEO

Organic or Natural Search Engine Optimisation is the process of making changes to a website such as increasing keyword density, altering page names and hidden meta data as well as creating a strategy to acquire more inbound links. It usually includes a number of steps and processes including keyword research, directory submission, link popularity improvement, site content enhancement and competitor analysis. The changes made to a website can be virtually undetectable to anyone viewing it but can make a big difference to the websites ranking in Search Engines. Organic Search Engine Optimisation improves the position in which a website appears in the natural search engine results rather than the Sponsored Links section.
