Payment Restrictions

Up until now, eBay has allowed a number of payment options such as cheque, money orders, credit card and direct bank deposits. But this is going to change here in Australia. From June 17th, eBay Australia will require all payments to be made using PayPal or directly in person. If the personal payment option doesn’t suit (long distance purchasing), then this change will mean buyers must have a PayPal account and use their credit card. There are to be some exceptions to these new requirements and that will be for large items such as cars, motorcycles, aircraft, boats, caravans, trailers, trucks services, real estate and businesses for sale.

The reasons for this change, according to eBay, is to increase protection for sellers but it could also have an alternative motive. You may have read an article in the papers recently involving Stolen Military Gear Hawked on Ebay.
Are these changes also designed to reduce the animosity of purchasers?

Leaving that theory aside, there is another disadvantages to this change, and this is the fact that there will be an additional PayPal fee added to the purchase. This averages around 2%.

Even so, eBay claim this to be a good change that will benefit all users. mainly because most of their members already do use PayPal.
