What is VoIP Conference Calling?

Voip stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It  enables you to use your broadband Internet connection to make phone calls. When you set up VoIP in your home or office, you can use your normal phone or computer to make calls for a much cheaper rate than standard telephone rates. Some calls may even be free depending on your provider. A great way to save your business money is to use the VoIP technology for conference calling. VoIP conference calling lets someone at a different location call one or more colleagues or friends for very little cost.

What do you need for VoIP Conference Calling?

VoIP conference software comes in two basic varieties: free and commercial. The Free VoIP conference software packages are often difficult to setup and use whereas the commercial packages tend to be slick and easy to install and use. Another factor is that  the commercial VoIP conference software packages also have setup fees and recurring costs for conference room access.
Which option you choose depends upon your budget of time and money.

How VoIP Conference Calling works

Conference call participants connect via a conference bridge, which is a server that allows multiple people to talk to each other. A company may own its own bridge or subscribe to an outside company to host conference calls on its bridge. Across the Internet, the voice data is sent over the web in a similar process to sending an email.

VoIP lets participants join in from their computers, using a microphone and speakers instead of a traditional phone. Because VoIP calls are considerably cheaper than traditional phone calls, many companies and individuals have started using VoIP as their main communication method. Companies with a VoIP service provider can usually upgrade to get teleconferencing.
